Manly Hardy was a fur buyer and dealer, naturalist, writer and ornithologist from Brewer, Maine. Although they never met, Hardy maintained an extensive correspondence with William Brewster, an ornithologist, writer, and naturalist from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hardy's daughter, Fannie Hardy Eckstorm, was a naturalist, historian, folklorist and writer who spent most of her life in Brewer. She too corresponded extensively with William Brewster.
