Andrew is greatly blessed to recieve a copy directly from the Markham's latest book of the their joint efforts. He will read it after he gets pass the new year. He tells that they live in troubled times and hope this is the last war. He discusses Man with the Hoe. He thinks of it as Man with the Sword.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
