This note is on the bottom of a response from Mr. James L. Whitney, of the Public Library of the City of Boston. Mr. Whitney's assistant had identified resources that Mr. Markham had requested dealing with Ponce de Leon. Markham, forwarded the response to Mr. Torrence asking him if he had any of the titles given.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
