Primarily business correspondence and legal records of a capitalist of Portland, Connecticut. Covell invested extensively, as illustrated by his incoming and outgoing letters, the notes and bonds he issued and received, and the deeds to land in and around Portland. He also was a director of the Middlesex Quarry and some documents related to that enterprise are included in the collection. Among his correspondents or clients were members of the Ellsworth family of Windsor, Connecticut, Socrates Denison of Chester, Connecticut, and Joseph P. Augur of Meriden, Connecticut. A significant number of deeds and other legal documents from Washington County, New York, are part of the collection and may belong to a branch of the family related by marriage. The most common name among these deeds is Thomas Brayton.
