Letter, May 10, San Jose, California [to] Mr. Edwin Markham, New York City. / Henry Mead Bland. 1919.

Henry discusses a payment to Eswin. He enclosed clippings of Markham House. He discusses pictures hanging there. He has had help from Louis Brach, Bushnell and Mrs. George. He is hoping that Senator Phelan will help celebrate Edwins's birthday. The Senator is involved with the Teachers Assoc. and what he has been doing. His friend Samuel G. Tompkins an attorney is looking out for the legal matters of Markham House. Henry is going to spend his summer with Mr. Heynemann. Mrs. Bland'd health is better. Henry has enclosed Edwins membership to the Lions Club along with a poem he wrote. "A Ballad of Optimism."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
