Henry heard from their friend Albert bender that Edwin is taking a rest in Kansas City. He thanks Edwin for his friendly benefices and happy hours he has afforded him. He wrote him a poem. He is going to take a rest too and the fireplace is in the process.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
