The first of these two diary typescripts covers the years from 1856 to approximately 1859. It describes James Farmer's life in Fort Ephraim, Utah, with an emphasis on his ministries within the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, as well as descriptions of other Church members and their sermons, including those of Brigham Young. Farmer also details his agricultural endeavors and the building of adobes. He also briefly describes interactions, both negative and positive, with local Indians. Pages 156-157 list dates and birthplaces for various family members, including his wives and children. This typescript is a complete version of HM 27968 (b). The second diary typescript details the years of James Farmer's Mormon mission to England, beginning in 1881. In it he describes his ministrations and sermons, as well as personal details about various Latter Day Saints Church elders and their families. Mentions are included of the murder of Lord Frederick Cavendish in Ireland on May 6, 1882, and the 1882 passing of the Edmunds Act, which reaffirmed the illegality of polygamy in the United States. At the back of the diary are 7 pages which appear to detail court proceedings from the murder of someone named Ottison (it is unclear whether these notes were written by Farmer).

James Farmer was born in Leicester, Leicestershire, England, on June 12, 1825. He converted to Mormonism around 1843, when he was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. On January 7, 1849, he was ordained as an Elder in the LDS Church at Houseforth, Yorkshire. Farmer had been employed at Butcher and Lyons Hosier, but was fired by that company due to his involvement in the LDS Church.
