H. Milton Short Jr. was born in Atlanta, Ga., in 1919 and moved to Charlotte, N. C., in 1929. He attended Charlotte City Schools, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and the UNC-CH Law School. During World War II, Short served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. After the war he began a law practice and furniture retail business in Charlotte and Florence, South Carolina.
