The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff was created by an act of the State Legislature in 1873 as a land grant institution for blacks. The Branch Normal College opened 27 Sept. 1875 with seven students and Joseph Carter Corbin as professor. Ten baccalaureate degrees were awarded from 1882 to 1894. Operated as a junior college from 1894 to 1929, the institution became a four-year college in 1942 and was renamed Arkansas Agricultural, Mechanical, and Normal College.
