Negative taken of Senator George Bell from Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas, in the early 1890s. Senator George Bell served in the Arkansas Legislature representing the Fifteenth District, Desha and Chicot Counties between 1891-1894. After graduating of Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Bell was a school teacher. Elected in 1890, Senator George W. Bell (Republican) was a leader among the 12 black legislators serving at that time. Bell led the movement against the Tillman Bill, which provided for segregation of railroad and trolley cars. Although he fought hard against segregation, Senator Bell could not stop the "Jim Crow Segregation."
