St. Peter's Church in Pine Bluff, Ark. [graphic]. [189-?]

Negative taken of the first Saint Peter's Church in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, Arkansas. Starting as a mission church of Saint Joseph's in Pine Bluff, St. Peter's Church was built for the African American Catholics by Monsignor John M. Lucey in 1894 on State Street between 15th and 16th Avenues in Pine Bluff. The funding for the church came primarly from the efforts of the editors and readers of "The Pilot," a newpaper in Boston, Massachutes. Reverend Patrick J. Sheehy was the first resident preist of the church, starting in 1894-1895. The church was located next to Colored Industrial Institute (later called St. Peter's School), a Catholic school for African Americans that opened in 1889 under the staffing of the Sisters of Charity from Nazareth, Kentucky. A new church designed by T.E. Windham, an African American architect, replaced this structure in 1903.
