Henry sends Markham a copy of a small book of poems that were published in appreciation to Henry by the Uni of Calf. given to Robert Gordon Sproul, the President of the college. This was published by the Pacific Short Story Club in San Jose, Calif.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
