William Hughes letters, 1815-1849.

This collection consists of letters written to William Hughes while living in Buck and Liberty County, Georgia. The letters date from 1815 to 1849. Many of which concern land purchases and ownership, as Hughes was a land surveyor; others contain discourses in personal affairs, including deaths from Yellow Fever and murder in Sunbury, Georgia. Two separate letters in the collection affirm Hughes's purchases of cotton. Correspondents include Mr. Samuel James Jones, Thomas Bacon, Major A. Maylank, Matthew Bennet, Polly Spain, Thomas L. Winn, Matthew Spain, Allen Inman, P. M. Compton, Dr. C. W. Rogers, Col. George McAllister, John J. Maxwell, William Rembrant(?), Edward Anderson, Elias Reed, and Captain P. Wiltberger. An additional letter between P. M. Compton and Lewis H. Lynch is included in the collection.

William Hughes was born in Sunbury, Georgia and attended the Sunbury Academy. He was the last surviving pupil of Dr. William McWhir, the long-time principal of the Academy. He taught at Sand Hills School from 1816 to 1817, and again in 1819. He also taught at the Sunbury Academy in 1818; both of these schools were in Liberty County. He was elected surveyor of Liberty County in 1844 and continued in that capacity into the 1880s. In 1847 he was also Deputy Surveyor of Bryan County. He made surveys...
