California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). Howard Vigne Sutherland was born in Cape Town, South Africa on August 3, 1868, the son of Thomas and Sophy (Fairbridge) Sutherland. He was a playwright, journalist, and poet who authored "Jacinta, a California Idyll and Other Verses" (1900); "Bigg's Barr and other Klondyke Ballads" (1901); "Songs of a City" (1904); Idylls of Greece, 3 series (1908-1914); and "Other of the North" (1913), among other works.
