General description of the collection: The Winfield Scott Hancock papers are general officers papers which include 29 letters (mostly personal) sent to General Hancock (1863-1885). Correspondents include: Charles Francis Adams, John Quincy Adams, Jr., John Jacob Astor, August Belmont, W.W. Corcoran, William Endicott, Rutherford B. Hayes, Abram Hewitt, Mary Todd Lincoln, Robert T. Lincoln, George McCrary, Count of Paris, John M. Schofield, Edwin M. Stanton and Samuel J. Tilden. Some letters concern Mrs. Hancock. Also includes a biographical documentary on Hancock done by various officers on his service; two scrapbooks concerning his presidential campaign and his death. Some genealogical materials such as a personal letter to Mrs. Joseph Adams (1810) and genealogies of the Croke, Griffin, Jansen, McPhaedres, and Pickering families.

Winfield Scott Hancock (February 14, 1824 – February 9, 1886) was a United States Army officer and the Democratic nominee for President of the United States in 1880. He served with distinction in the Army for four decades, including service in the Mexican–American War and as a Union general in the American Civil War. Known to his Army colleagues as "Hancock the Superb", he was noted in particular for his personal leadership at the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. His military service continued afte...
