J.T.W. Tillar (1833-1908) was born in Southampton County, virginia, and moved to Arkansas in the 1850s. He settled in Selma, Drew County, Arkansas, and engaged in the mercantile business. After serving in the Confederate Army, Tillar became involved in banking in Pine Bluff, Jefferson County, and in Little Rock, Pulaski County, where he lived from 1887 until his death. He was also a cotton planter for a number of years. The town of Tillar in Drew County is named after him.
