Henry Tells Edwin that Richard Asrhan sends his thanks for the letter of introduction. Richard also tells him that he read Edwin's Lincoln poem and enjoyed the Sower. Henry discusses Richard and his wife. He thanks him for his Poem on the Declaration of Peace. He refers to Walt Whitman.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
