General description of the collection: Henry Burrell papers include personal correspondence while serving with the 15th Illinois Infantry Regiment in Missouri, Tennessee, and Mississippi (1861-1863). A few personal letters and many official papers on his later duty with the 142nd Illinois Infantry Regiment in West Tennessee in 1864 and some commission and discharge papers from the 58th US Troop unit are found. Miscellaneous official papers relate to his postwar service with the Illinois National Guard (1877-1882). Other material includes biographical material (1839-1914); genealogical data on the Burrell family (1806-1970); clippings on the Civil War era (1859-1865) and a paper by his wife, Mary, on her childhood in Illinois (1856-1861) and on the role of Illinois in the Civil War.
