Diaries and letterbooks kept by Helen Ruthven Waterston primarily while traveling in Europe with her parents, Rev. Robert Cassie and Anna Cabot Lowell (Quincy) Waterston, 1855-58. Diaries describe her travels in New York, Liverpool, London, Dublin, Paris, Rome, Florence, and Naples; social engagements; and churches and ministers visited with her father. Also includes a memoir written by Anna following Helen's death in 1858; commonplace-books compiled by Robert and Anna in memory of Helen, 1858-59; and commonplace-books kept by Anna, 1823-37.

Anna Cabot Lowell Quincy was born June 27, 1812 in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the youngest daughter of Josiah Quincy III, who served as president of Harvard University, U.S. Representative, and Mayor of Boston. Her mother was Eliza Susan Morton Quincy. Anna's grandfather, Josiah Quincy II, had also served as mayor of Boston, as did her brother, Josiah. Her other siblings were: Eliza, Abigail, Maria, Margaret, and Edmund.
