Holograph letter, 17 October 1914 to Allen Evans, a relative, regarding his entry into the Episcopal Ministry. Discusses good works and inner spiritual grace. Cites G.H. Wilkarson of London, England as a fine example of a parish priest. Urges a regular time for contemplation. Suggests preparation for his duties and a consecrated ministry. Mahan wrote this letter upon the urging of Evans' mother.

Alfred T. Mahan, naval officer, was born in 1840. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1859. He served as second president of the Naval War College, 1885-1886 and again in 1892-1893.
