James Archbald papers.

The James Archbald papers contain predominantly letters received by Archbald relating to his employment with the Delaware and Hudson Co. from 1826 through the early 1850s, the Pennsylvania Coal Company from the late 1840s to the early 1850s, the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad from 1852 through 1855, and in smaller quantity from the Delaware Lackawanna and Western Railroad from 1822 through 1855, and personal financial documents and correspondence to and from family members.

James Archbald was born in Ayrshire, Scotland on March 3, 1793 and at the age of fourteen, immigrated to America with his parents. In 1817 he became a contractor on the Erie Canal and worked with John Jervis. Jervis appointed Archbald as an engineer on the Delaware and Hudson Canal which opened in 1828. John A. Roebling emigrated to New Jersey from Germany in 1831, abandoned farming, and returned to his profession of engineering. He moved to Trenton, N.J., in about 1848 and built a steel wire plant, operated as John A. Roebling's Sons Company. John A.
