Ellison ranching photographs, ca. 1885-1915.

Black-and-white photographs of family and friends depict ranching activity of the Ellison family. Many images deal with everyday life on the ranch including cattle branding, horseback riding, chuck wagon meals, slaughtering hogs, and herding cattle. There are turn-of-the-century images of family life including picnics, a woman reading, children, dolls and a tea set, a July 4, 1900 outdoor celebration including a piano, and girls feeding a bottle to a lamb. Family members depicted include Jesse Ellison, son Pearl Ellison, daughters Helen Duette, Denie, and Lena, grandson Slim Ellison, and friends Al Sieber, R.B. Sims, and the Campbell family. There are several views of hunting and wild game including Duette Ellison posed with shotgun and bear and two girls wearing ammunition belts. There are also photographs of Cibecue Apaches living near "Q" Ranch including men, women, and children, Alchisay, and medicine men Bosnic Lupe and John Dazen. Another image shows the top of the Snake Pit at the Arizona State Prison.

Glenn Reynolds Slim Ellison, cowboy, storyteller and author, was born to Pearl Grafton and Lourinda Frances (Price) Ellison in Globe, Arizona on July 19, 1891 and lived almost his entire life in Gila County. Ellison served at various periods as a cowboy, trail driver, homestead rancher, and camp cook in central Arizona and received little formal education. Pioneer Arizona cattleman, Col. Jesse W. Ellison established the "Q" Ranch east of Young, Arizona in 1885. In 1904, his daughter, Duette, married George W.P. Hunt, Arizona's first state governor.
