Letter, 23rd Decr. 1853, Dundee, to My Dear Sir.

Gilfillan explains that he had received a letter from John Ramsay, author of Woodnotes, and he "lost no time in sending away a testimonial." He adds that he is "excessively busy ... The Poets prosper more and more decidedly. I have a large work too on hand but although never forgot, it moves on slowly."

George Gilfillan was a Scottish author and minister. Born in Comrie and educated at the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, he became minister of a Dundee congregation in 1836 and remained there for the rest of his life. He published sermons, theology, essays, and criticism, notably A Gallery of Literary Portraits, and established a good literary reputation for himself.
