Campbell was in Washington to collect debts owed him from the federal government for his backing of the Fremont expedition. A 7 November 1845 letter to Mrs. Sally Thomas regarding the divorce of Maryland governor Francis Thomas from Sallie (McDowell) Thomas, niece of Mrs. Benton.
