Letters of brothers, John and David Baker, to family members describe their experiences in two regiments (the 37th and 96th) of the Illinois Infantry. The earlier letters by David note the formation of the Illinois Infantry, 37th Regiment at Chicago. John's letters describe the 96th Infantry's movement through Ky.; pillaging a house near Lexington; Confederates wounded at Perryville; conditions of the hospital at Harrodsburg; and skirmishes near Franklin, Tenn.
