Charles L. Bankhead letter and John S. Mosby certificate [manuscript] 1813, 186[?]

In a letter to John Taliaferro, 1813 September 30, Charles L. Bankhead discusses a merino sheep purchased for Taliaferro: "The ewe that bore him and the ram that begat him were attached to the celebrated flock of Prince the Lord knows what but he was a prince. Long may he live with you and much may he do." The collection also contains a fragment [left half] of a certificate of enlistment, January 2, 186[?], for J. S. alias [?] in the Partisan Rangers signed by John S. Mosby.

John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
