Contains 18 legal size typescript (mimeo.) sermons, some with manuscript additions and corrections, on a variety of Christian religious topics and 3 legal size typescript (mimeo.) detailed travel narratives about an ocean trip around Cape Horn (Fall of 1852 - Feb. 1853, 28 p.) that included a fire on board, a trip across the continental United States (1869, 24 p.), and while residing in California during the Gold Rush era (39 p.). Most sermons also have a subtitle Bible verse reference. The sermons are undated but are likely from the active part of Bell's career that began in 1852. Also includes a note from the editor of the Oakland Enquirer Publishing Company on business letterhead stationery, dated August 29, 1894, affirming interest in publishing historical sketches on the history of the Presbyterian church in Oakland to be provided by Reverend Bell.

Samuel B. Bell was ordained an Evangelist of the Presbyterian denomination at Onondaga, New York, in 1852, and in November of the same year was sent by the American Home Missionary Society to the Pacific Coast.
