Clement E. Warner papers, 1855-1918.

Miscellaneous papers of Clement E. Warner, a state legislator and colonel of the 36th Wisconsin Infantry, including an account by Warner of Lee's surrender at Appomattox and preceding events, an 1855 letter to Herbert Lewis of Sun Prairie discussing state politics, and letters and memorials at the time of Warner's death in 1916. Also included are a handwritten Wisconsin regimental history by E. B. Quiner, a typed transcript of the history, and 11 pocket diaries of Frances E. Warner. A Downer College graduate and former school teacher, she resided at the Warner family homestead in Windsor, Wis. and cared for her mother. Additionally, there is correspondence from Clement Warner to his family and friends during the war (1964-1965) describing his unit's activities, marching, skirmishes at Petersburg Crater (Va.), and regimental casualties. He lost his left arm in battle and was discharged as Lt. Col. in July, 1865. Also included are two reproduced photographs of the Warner family.
