Periodicals Collection 1784-2008 (ongoing).

The Sophia Smith Collection holds over 1,000 periodical titles relating to women dating from the eighteenth century to the present. There are magazines, newspapers, newsletters, scholarly journals, zines, and other serials covering a wide variety of topics in popular culture; literature and the arts; fashion; national and international women's rights; and social and political movements. Early titles include Ladies' Companion (1840-1844), Woman's Journal (1870-1916), Lucifer: The Light Bearer (1897-1901), and the Birth Control Review (1917-1937). Independantly Women's liberation periodicals such as Shrew, Rat, and Velvet Fist are also well represented. There are approximately fifty current subscriptions. Older holdings range from full-runs to single issues for certain titles.
