German / American artistic exchange during the Cold War [videorecording] / [conference sponsored by the Getty Research Institute].

The conference was presented in conjunction with the exhibition Art of two Germanys/Cold War cultures, on view at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (January 25, 2009-April 19, 2009). Featuring prominent scholars from both Germany and the United States, the conference examines the cultural and intellectual exchanges that occurred between the United States and Germany from 1945 to 1989. The conference broadly looks at the relationships between East and West German artists and intellectuals and their American counterparts during the Cold War. Scholarly presentations are interspersed with conversations among artists and arts professionals who were major participants in this history. One session is devoted to specific examples of German artists in America and American artists in Germany, and another session focuses on larger issues of cultural and intellectual exchange between the two countries.
