James L. Rodgers attended Brooklyn Polytechnic in 1940-1941, and then joined the Navy. He attended pre-flight school at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC, was transferred to the NAS, Olathe, KS, and was discharged in January 1943. He then joined the V-12 program and completed his education at Cornell University. The University of North Carolina was chartered by the state's General Assembly in 1789. Its first student was admitted in 1795.
