Wheelwright family papers primarily include correspondence between Boston architect Edmund March Wheelwright and his mother Hannah Giddings, father George William, wife Elizabeth (Bessie) Brooks Wheelwright, and others, 1866-1912 (including a few references to his architectural career); papers of Elizabeth Wheelwright, 1912-49, including condolence letters following the death of her son John Brooks in 1940, letters received from her grandson during World War II, a scrapbook compiled in 1923-42, and a commonplace book compiled ca. 1878; drafts and publications of writings by Edmund March Wheelwright on architecture, the Harvard Lampoon, and John F. Andrew; and architectural sketches by John Brooks Wheelwright, ca. 1930s. Also includes related Brooks family papers such as correspondence between Edward Brooks, his father Peter Chardon, and mother Ann Gorham, and courtship letters sent to his wife Elizabeth Boott Brooks, 1816-36; letters sent by Francis B. Born in Boston to an old and aristocratic family, he studied architecture at Harvard University and later the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, but never finished a degree. After expulsion from Harvard, he became a member of the lost generation, and embraced socialism.
