Green Clay letters received, 1808-1813 [microform].

Microfilm copies of manuscript material, 1780-1813, from the New York Public Library Manuscript Division includes one reel with letters received by Green Clay. The second reel contains various orderly books from [Hezekiah] Maham's Legion, South Carolina, 1781-1782; Brig. General Green Clay, March 19-Aug. 25, 1813; and New Jersey Line, Dec. 1780-June 23, 1781. Maham's order book details the organization of a cavalry regiment of light dragoons, including returns and appraisal of horses. Green's order book, written by his aide, Jos. H. Hawkins, details the march from Lexington, Ky. to help defend Ft. Meigs, Ohio; and includes diagrams of marching formation and camp layout. The New Jersey order book includes copies of orders issued by the Adjutant General Alexander Scammell.

Continental army officer. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Harvard, Scammell moved to New Hampshire in 1772, where he studied law with John Sullivan and participated in the patriot movement. A major of the N.H. Brigade, Scammell in 1776 accepted command of the 3rd N.H. Continentals, serving until 1778 when Washington appointed him army adjutant general. Green Clay was born in Powhaton County, Virginia, and emigrated to Kentucky in 1777. A surveyor, he amassed a vast land estate, settling in Madison County. A Kentucky legislator and soldier, he served as major general in Kentucky Militia during the War of 1812. A number of South Carolina militia units were adopted into the Continental Army. The 1st South Carolina Regiment, organized in 1775, consisted of ten companies. The Regiment was consolidated, although it retained its name, with the 5th Regiment, February 11, 1780 to consist of nine companies.
