Autograph statement on the age of Shakespeare by A.C. Swinburne [manuscript], 1879 August 10.

Statement signed by Swinburne. Swinburne reiterates his remark, made in an essay published in the Gentleman's magazine, that the age of letters in which Shakespeare wrote should be called after Shakespeare, rather than after Elizabeth or James. Responds to criticism he received in the Spectator. In an unidentified hand, the annotation "Mr. Swinburne's essay on King Edward III," the source of Swinburne's original comment.
