Christopher Lyman account books, 1834-1883.

Daybook, monthly record, checkbook, and account book kept by Christopher Lyman of Hartford, Connecticut. The account book (1835-1883) contains records of Lyman's stock ownership in organizations such as The Hartford Fire Insurance (for which he worked for many years) and the Hartford and Providence Railroad. Lyman also kept track of income and expenses for the Hartford Bridge Company. Trust income for several individuals is included in the account book, as well as records regarding his property ownership within the city. The checkbook (1838-1859) has some stubs that have been filled out, but is primarily a book of blank checks. The daybook (1834-1839) mostly deals with the Hartford Bridge Co., particularly stock sales and transfers. There are some unrelated entries, such as payment on August 6, 1835 for writing music. The final book (1850-1876)is a monthly compilation of accounts. The monthly book contains many similar entries that are found in the others. Additionally, Lyman made many donations to churches, Sunday schools, and similar organizations. He also invested in land in Michigan.

On May 10, 1810, the Connecticut General Assembly incorporated the Hartford Fire Insurance Company, naming Nathaniel Terry its first president. The company wrote the first fire insurance policy for an institution of higher learning when it insured Yale in 1825. Hartford Fire expanded west to Columbus, Ohio, in 1852 and San Francisco, California, in 1870. In 1871, the company paid $2 million in claims from the Great Chicago Fire.
