Papers, 1796-1925.

The collection is comprised of primarily of legal papers, but also contains a ledger and a few items of correspondence. The legal documents are mostly deeds for land, but they include a will for Fannie Bell Bond, a list of property inherited by Elizabeth Hopton, and a list of subscriptions for the Everettsville Female Academy. John Everett of Goldsboro, N.C., kept the ledger between 1825 and 1869, but the volume also contains other types of entries, including records for girls boarding at the Everettsville Female Academy (1845, 1847; on pp. 54-55, 62-63); accounts for Everett's guardianships of several children (1840's-1850's); records for his managing the property, including land and slaves, of Jane Best; and lists of his own slaves (p. 128, 137, 155-156) as well as those of Samuel Smith (p. 15). Other ledger entries include remedies for ailments and lists in pounds of the cotton and hogs Everett sold. The correspondence includes two letters written by Susan G. Becton in Pennsylvania to her friend Jane S. Everett of Goldsboro in 1862 and on May 10, 1865. The letters focus on Becton's sympathy for her fellow Southerners, her terrible homesickness, and her desire to receive letters about her friends and relatives in North Carolina.
