F.D. is sending Markham other copies of Modern Poetry and America First. e tells Markham he has been deprived in a financial way from his literary endeavors. Publishers want to see his Sleep, Dolly, Sleep with the music. He would like to be associated with an authors or poet orgainzation.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
