Laura Burt Brantley collection, 1828-1916.

This collection consists of papers collected by Laura Burt Brantley. Included are photocopies and typed copies of letters containing news of family, friends and business, principally of Charles Ward, 1794-1850; a diary of Willis Perry Burt, 1861-1865, which recounts his experiences with the Company K, 12th Georgia Regiment in Virginia and with the Chattahoochee Sentimentals (Company D, 46th Georgia Regiment) in and around Charleston and in the Army of Tennessee, as well as Joseph E. Johnson's surrender in North Carolina (there is also a typed copy of the diary in the collection), as well as two photographs of W.P. Burt; and genealogical research on the Ward, Lindsey, and Lockett families compiled by Brantley, ca. 1912-1916. Charles Ward was born in Plymouth, New Hampshire, the son of Daniel and Bridget French Ward. He married Catherine Lindsay and followed a career as an army officer stationed at Fort Delaware in 1829 and Vergennes, Vermont in 1833. By 1837, he had left the army and settled in Kichafoona, Marion County, Georgia, to raise silk worms on his plantation. the Wards had six children: Rebecca (1820-1821); Catherine Lindsey Ward Shorter (1821-1857); James Noble Ward (1823-1858); Marcus Lindsey Ward (b. 1829); Laura Amelia Ward Chapman (b. 1831); and Frederick Arthur Ward (1833-1838). Willis Perry Burt (1842-1906) was born on a farm near Cusseta, Georgia. After his service in the Civil War, he studied dentistry near Cusseta and later in Baltimore, Maryland. After that he married Kate Laura Chapman of Talbotton, Georgia; they lived in Americus, Georgia, where she had 8 children, of which five survived childhood: Lindsay Wart Burt; Charles Perry Burt; Laura Burt Brantley; Mary Burt Redwin; and Jack F. Burt. Burt died in Atlanta in 1906 and is buried in a Confederate Veterans Circle. Kate Laura Chapman Burt died on Little St. Simons Island in 1924.
