Noel Streatfield was born in England in 1897, the daughter of the Bishop of Lewes, previously the vicar of the family's small village. It was her country childhood that inspired her autobiography A Vicarage Family. She attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, beginning her career as an actress. In the 1930s, Noel began writing. Her first children's book, Ballet Shoes, was published in 1936. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the Carnegie Medal in 1938 for The Ci...
