Translation provided by Werner Habicht: His Royal Majesty has looked at the letter submitted yesterday by legation counselor Schubart. But since, considering the great difference between present times and the times of Shakespeare, his plays require great changes if they are to be used successfully for an audience of the current era, it must be all the more difficult to make a choice among them. His Royal Majesty will therefore leave that choice entirely to the author. Decreed Stuttgart, Dec. 16, 1806. [signed:] Friedrich.
