Dr. D. Elton Trueblood was a Quaker scholar, teacher and author born in Pleasantville, Iowa, in 1900. He graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1922. He did graduate study at Harvard University and received his doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University. J. E. Wallace Sterling was president of Stanford University from 1949 to 1968. During his 19 years in office, Stanford's endowment nearly doubled, the faculty increased 170 percent, graduate programs were improved, major building plans were completed, the Medical School was moved to campus from San Francisco, and the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center was built. Construction of Memorial Church began in 1899 and the church was dedicated in 1903. After being partially destroyed in the 1906 earthquake, the church was rebuilt and opened again in 1913. Jane Eliza Lathrop was born August 25, 1828, the daughter of Dyer Lathrop of Albany, New York. In 1850 she married Leland Stanford, returning with him to California in 1855 where they settled in Sacramento. Leland Stanford later became President of the Southern Pacific Railroad and Governor of California. Their only child, Leland Stanford, Jr., was born in 1868.
