Composer, violinist, conductor, and photographer Ernest Bloch was born on July 24, 1880, in Geneva, Switzerland. In 1894 he began the study of music theory and composition with Emile Jacques-Dalcroze at the Geneva Conservatory of Music, who advised him to continue violin instruction under Louis Etienne-Reyer at the same institution.
