Historical collections particularly relating to Gloucestershire [manuscript], compiled ca. 1713-ca. 1730.

Compiled by Richard Furney. Contents include Modus tenendi parliamentum, and Orders set down by the duke of Medina Sidonia for the invasion of England, May 28, 1588 (W.b.582); commentaries on some of the 39 Articles based on Gilbert Burnet's Exposition of the Thirty nine articles (W.b.588); a song, Carmen Lantoniense (W.b.582); and above all excerpts from records of the city, abbey and diocese of Gloucester and of other places, especially religious houses, in Gloucestershire, and also from records of the diocese of Winchester; brief abstracts of Gloucestershire wills; and lists of manuscripts in Oriel College and Gloucester cathedral. Most of the volumes have one or more indices. A short list of contents is tipped into each. Autograph note signed by G.W. Counsel, 1828, on the contents and the history of the volumes in W.b.581.

English antiquary and collector. He began collecting while at Rugby School and Oxford. On inheriting his father's estate at Middle Hill in Worcestershire, Phillipps embarked on a career of collecting manuscripts and books.
