Pages in the front, back, and middle of the volume contain notes on brickmaking and observations on a tour of brickyards made between 1854 May 11-24. Phillips traveled from Boston and visited Staten Island (brickyard of Edward Merritt), Rahway, N.J., Philadelphia (brickyards of Joseph Matlack and John Liner), and Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y. (brickyard of John Cox), concluding that "Mr. Hubbil [sic] near Boston carrys on his works in as economical and extensive [a] manner as any brickmaker or company in the country." Included are sketches of brickmaking machinery. With a copy of the log book of the ship Prospero, William Chatfield, master, 1855 Oct. 10-1856 Jan. 21, containing meteorological observations, ship sightings, and other details of the voyage.
