Discussion of the founding and history of Columbia College, its relocation to the Eau Claire community, an early street-car suburb north of Columbia, S.C.; includes an account of a scandal during the brief presidency of Dr. Griffith Pugh, appointed president of the College in 1916, during which 5 women were expelled for leaving campus to socialize with neighborhood boys and dance to a Victrola phonograph. Includes a chronology of the College from 1859 to 1926; and excerpts from interviews with Niven McGill and Ruth Miller. Research paper completed by graduate student enrolled in Curriculum in Higher Education (EDCI 728) taught by Prof. Craig Alan. Kridel at University of South Carolina, School of Education.
