Publications/Promotions Collection, 1866-2000.

Publication materials are recorded in a Microsoft Access database by box number, folder number, title, author, date of publication, series, and publishing department, which is formatted alphabetically by title. Series within the collection are: evangelism section, missions section, planning section, and services section. These divisions reflect the organization of the Home Mission Board during the twentieth century when the majority of the collection was published. Researchers should note that many materials are general in nature and have no known author or publication date. Materials in the collection include annual reports, catalogs, directories, filmstrip scripts, guide books, handbooks, maps, mission study books, newsletters, pamphlets, photographs, posters, programs, product guides, research reports, resume guides, and workbooks.

The Home Mission Board began work in Cuba in 1886. Work in the country expanded for about a decade, but by the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, nearly all mission activity had been demoralized. At the close of the war, the Board entered an agreement with the American Baptist Home Mission Society under which the eastern half of Cuba was transferred to the Society and the SBC's Home Mission Board retained the western half. Southern Baptist work in Western Cuba flourished through the 1950s....
