Joseph W. Upshaw interview conducted March 28, 2008 in Helena, Mont. In this interview Mr. Upshaw discusses his service in the United States Army, attending basic training in Fort Lewis Washington as a member of the Montana National Guard, guard unit located at Chinook, Mont., training for jungle warfare in Australia during World War II, commanding a mortar platoon, training with fence posts to simulate mortar fire, 163rd Infantry deployment to New Guinea, friendly-fire incidents cased by malfunctioning mortar rounds, forty years of service in the military, assisting with the deployment of the 163rd to Iraq, and dropping the atomic bombs on Japan. Joseph W. Upshaw was born in Mesa, Arizona in 1920. His family later moved to Chinook, Mont. where at the age of sixteen he joined the Montana National Guard in 1936. The 163rd trained to fight in Europe and on September 16, 1940 they were placed on active duty status. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the 163rd deployed to Australia on board the Queen Elizabeth I to defend against a possible Japanese invasion.
