Charles Lanman collection about Pennsylvania congressmen, 1829-1869.

The Charles Lanman collection consists of correspondence from Pennsylvania Senators and Representatives of the Pennsylvania State Legislature. Most of the 209 letters are in response to Mr. Lanman's request for biographical information to be included in The Dictionary of the United States Congress Containing Biographical Sketches of its Members from the Foundation of the Government : with an Appendix, Comp. as a Manual of Reference for the Legislator and Statesman. This volume was first published in 1859 and later renamed The Biographical Directory of the American Congress, 1774-1996. Typewritten summaries of the personal, family, and professional information contained in the original letters accompany each congressman's response. Charles Lanman, writer, journalist and amateur painter, was born in Monroe, Michigan, June 15, 1819. He spent much of his career working as a journalist in Monroe and Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to Washington DC in 1848 and worked as a librarian in various branches of government, including the War Department, the Copyrights Division of the Department of State, the executive library of President Fillmore, and the Interior Department.
