This series contains records of the Athletic Council (1907-1926, 1931) and the Committee on Commencement Arrangements (1909-1933), both joint committees with administrative responsibilities. The Athletic Council files include primarily correspondence and reports. Material documenting the Committee on Commencement Arrangements consists mainly of President Garfield's correspondence concerning honorary degrees, commencement speakers and invitations. Newspaper clippings and lists of honorary degrees and prizes are also included in this material.

The Athletic Council's membership included alumni, faculty and undergraduates. The Council approved athletic programs, schedules, eligibility policies, and awards. The Committee on Commencement consisted of the Dean, the Treasurer, the Secretary of the Alumni and four members of the faculty.
