The collection consists of materials created by or related to Miriam Snow Mathes, Western Washington University librarian, educator, and benefactor. It includes biographical material; drafts and typescripts of autobiographical writings and travel accounts; materials related to her gift to the University of the Mathes Reading Figurines Collection; copies of documents concerning her relationship with the Western Washington University Foundation; materials related to the Nahbi Ram Joshi Scholarship she established at the University; and correspondence relating primarily to the foregoing matters. Much of the material is in the form of photocopies.

The WWU Centennial Oral History Project was initiated in 1993 by a dedicated group of staff and faculty. The stated goal of the project was the development of oral history interviews for use in the planned centennial celebration at Western Washington University, commemorating 100 years of scholarly achievement.
